Purpose: I know what I am here to do

The importance of purpose in life

Why not start off with a biggy!

This is multifaceted and can greatly impact our overall well-being and satisfaction.

Key reasons why, for me, purpose is crucial:

Having a sense of purpose provides a deeper meaning to our lives

It gives us a reason to wake up each day with enthusiasm and a sense of direction.

Purpose acts as a powerful motivator

It fuels our ambitions, drives us to overcome challenges, and helps us stay focused on our long-term goals. When we have a clear purpose, we’re more likely to stay committed and resilient in the face of obstacles.

Purpose serves as a compass to guide our life decisions

It helps us prioritise and make choices that are aligned with our values and long-term vision. Knowing our purpose allows us to filter out distractions and focus on what truly matters, leading to a more intentional and fulfilling life journey. Do you think you are drifting aimlessly along, or do you have a purpose? Do you get easily distracted. Ponder on why that may be.

Resilience and determination

When faced with setbacks, adversity, or difficult times, having a strong sense of purpose can provide us with the resilience and determination to persevere. Purpose reminds us of the bigger picture and encourages us to find meaning even in challenging circumstances.

Better mental and emotional well-being

Research suggests that individuals who have a sense of purpose in life experience better mental and emotional well-being. Purpose has been linked to lower rates of depression, anxiety, and stress – and I can vouch for that 100%. It provides a sense of identity and self-worth, leading to greater overall happiness and life satisfaction.

A quote by David McCulloch: Climb the mountain not to plant your flag, but to embrace the challenge. Enjoy the air and behold the view so you can see the world, not so the world can see you.

Another quote I love is by Mark Twain. The two most important days in your life are the day you’re born and the day you find out why.

So, the definition of purpose is the reason behind our existence. The driving force. It gives meaning and direction to our lives.

Purpose is NOT goals or ambitions because it's deeper and more profound.

How do goals differ from life purpose?

Goals are specific, measurable objectives that we set to achieve certain outcomes. However, goals are more task-oriented and can change over time as circumstances evolve. They are means to an end rather than the end in themselves.

How does ambition differ from life purpose?

For me ambition refers to our aspirations, desires, and dreams for success or achievement in a particular area. They often involve striving for external recognition, wealth, or validation within society. . While ambitions can drive us to work hard and pursue our dreams, they may not necessarily provide a deeper sense of fulfilment or purpose.

Purpose, on the other hand, is the underlying reason for our existence and the driving force that gives our lives meaning and significance. It’s about understanding our core values, passions, and what truly matters to us at a fundamental level. Purpose is the compass that guides our decisions, actions, and goals. It’s not tied to external achievements or societal expectations, but rather to our personal sense of fulfilment and the positive impact we can make in the world.

Discovering your purpose in life is a deeply personal and introspective process. While there’s no one-size-fits-all approach, here are some steps you can take

How to disccover your purpose

1. Take time to reflect on your values, passions, and what brings you joy and fulfilment. Ask yourself questions such as:

What activities or experiences make me lose track of time?

What do I feel passionate about?

What are my natural talents and strengths?

What values are important to me?

Reflecting on these aspects can provide valuable insights into what truly matters to you.

2. Be curious and open-minded to try new things. Exploring different interests allows you to discover what resonates with you on a deeper level. Pay attention to the activities that ignite your enthusiasm and bring you a sense of purpose.

3. Reflect on your past experiences, both positive and negative, and identify the lessons and values they have taught you. Consider the challenges you’ve overcome and the skills you have developed. Look for patterns or themes that emerge from your experiences and how they relate to your sense of purpose.

4. Pay attention to your intuition and inner voice. Sometimes, our intuition can guide us towards our purpose. Practice mindfulness, meditation, or journaling to connect with your inner self and gain clarity on what feels right and authentic to you.

5. Embrace growth and adaptability: Understand that discovering your purpose is a lifelong journey, and it can evolve and change over time. Embrace growth, be open to new opportunities, and adapt as you gain new insights and experiences. Purpose is not a destination but a continuous exploration and alignment of your values and passions.

So that was talking about your personal purpose, but have you defined the purpose of your business? If not, to me, this is crucial as it should be the rudder that steers the ship
